A 'Workout' Of Your Credit Card?

Many Who Order Over The Phone Get Unwanted Charges

  • Learn More About On Your Side

CLEVELAND, Posted 8:14 p.m. EST February 28, 2000 -- There are dozens of workout tapes on the market using big names to help whip you into shape.

    Tae Bo

On Your Side Troubleshooter Chris Caswell says that some people are getting more than tight abs from the tapes they ordered -- the orders are tightening up a few purses as well.

Robin Kail of New Philadelphia says that her Tae Bo workout tapes are giving her credit card a workout. She has been punching, stretching and moving herself into shape for the last year. Her workout of choice is Tae Bo, because she says that Tae Bo creator Billy Blanks lets you do the workout at your own pace.

But Kail says that the company from which she bought the Tae Bo tapes messed up. She noticed a charge on her Visa bank statement from a company called MWI essentials. She called MWI to find out what the charge was for.

Kail ordered Tae Bo over the phone about a year ago. She says that at that time, MWI asked her if she wanted to order other things, such as a discount club membership or future Tae Bo tapes. Kail claims that she answered "no" to each offer.

Kail says that apparently, MWI didn't get the message.

"I stopped (the MWI representative) and I said 'I never applied for this; never OK'd this,'" Kail said.

MWI Essentials says that its records show that Kail agreed to a club membership and only called to cancel after the $84 annual renewal fee showed up.

Even so, MWI agreed to credit her account for both the renewal and initial fees, for a total of $156.

Kail says that she is happy with the end results, but that she won't allow these miscommunications to happen again.

"Now I won't use my credit card over the phone again," she said.

MWI is one of many licensed dealers selling the Tae Bo tape, WEWS reports. A Tae Bo spokesperson said that millions of consumers don't have problems with their Tae Bo orders.

If you ordered Tae Bo or any other product over the phone, check your credit card statements closely to see if you've been charged for an unwanted membership or product.
