CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 2-year-old Wayne County boy had to undergo surgery after being clawed by a bear at his grandparents' home Sunday.
Marshall McEndree had multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to his leg, The Akron Beacon Journal reported. Smokey, a 4-year-old male black bear, was kept in a cage at the home on Akron Road in Chippewa Township in Wayne County. McEndree was climbing on the bear's cage when Smokey reached through and clawed his right calf. The boy apparently had spilled orange pop on his clothes attracting the bear. Smokey was kept in a cage near a tree in a fenced area of the back yard of Frank and Emma Walker. The bear will be euthanized Thursday. The state will perform a rabies test. The grandparents do have a permit to keep Smokey and another bear. However, neighbors have complained several times about the animals on the loose. There is no word if charges will be filed against the parents. McEndree is recovering at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.
