Energy-Saving Tips Can Save You Money

Keep Fans Throughout House

CLEVELAND, Posted 3:21 p.m. EDT August 16, 2001 -- Who wouldn't mind a few extra dollars at the end of each month?

NewsChannel5's Danita Harris has energy-saving tips in this week's Simplicity.

For instance, when doing laundry, use less and cooler water. Clean the lint filter in the dryer after every load to improve air circulation.

Be sure your dishwasher is full, but not overloaded.

Another way to save some money is to have fans in your house. Ceiling fans, box fans and oscillating fans all cost less than running your air conditioner, and they still help you keep cool.

Close window shades on the west and south side of your house to keep the sun from beating into your home.

White window coverings will reflect the most heat.

And remember what your mother always said -- if you're not in the room, turn out the light. That includes televisions and computers.

"I don't think screensavers are really going to save you that much energy, and if you do want to save some energy on your computer or your monitor, the best thing to do is (to) just reach over and hit the on/off button," WEWS engineer John Schaefer said.

Sometimes your refrigerator is wasting energy and you don’t even know it. Test the seal on your refrigerator by closing it on a dollar bill. If the bill pulls out easily you need a new seal.

If you would like to learn how to save energy in your home, get a booklet of tips by calling the Department of Energy at (800) 363-3732 or visiting the DOE's Web site.
