Local Opinions Still Split Over Election
Most People Say They're Happy It's Over
WESTLAKE, Ohio, Updated 12:51 p.m. EST December 14, 2000 -- George W. Bush left the Texas state capitol building Wednesday afternoon expecting a private telephone call from Al Gore before Gore addressed the nation Wednesday night, NewsChannel5 reported. Gore conceded, making Bush the forty-third president-elect of the United States. For America, it was a presidential election reluctant to end. Local people with whom NewsChannel5 talked said that the nation, and this area, are still split over the election. "I would have liked to have seen Gore win, personally," one man said.
"I'm glad Bush is the winner," another man said. "I think it's time for Bush and Gore to be statesmanlike about it and get over the bitter partisanship," Westlake resident Howard Ratcliff said. "It was overwhelming," Westlake resident Lucia Baudo said. "I didn't know what to believe. I think this has shown that my vote can be manipulated. My vote really doesn't count." At Lorain Catholic High School, the election gave government classes a lot of new material for many future voters to learn. "I think we need one defining thing so we don't confuse voters," student Greg Voltz said. "I'm glad it's over so I can hear some other news for a change," another student said. In Cuyahoga County, the respective leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties looked into the future. "It won't be easy, but as George W. Bush showed in Texas, he has the ability to bring people together on both sides to really get work done," Cuyahoga County Republican Party executive director Matt Cox said. "I think he'll show that when he gets to the White House." "It will always leave a doubt in people's minds as to whether George W. Bush really was elected the president, whether he actually had the numbers of votes to win the state of Florida," Cuyahoga County Democratic Party chairman Jimmy Dimora said. "There will always be suspicions as far as many people are concerned."
