Levies Go Down In Cities
PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio, Updated 7:43 a.m. EST November 8, 2000 -- The presidential election wasn't the only race amazingly close after the polls closed Tuesday.
The school levy races in several Ohio cities were very close as well.
The students in Stark County, Plain Township have been learning out of a locker room but will they build new schools?
With 40 percent reporting, voters say no in an astonishingly close race, where 7,635 (50 percent) voters were for, and 7,689 (50 percent) were against the Plain Local Schools Levy.
In Parma, an emergency levy was put on the ballots after the state said that the district wasn't financially stable.
The district laid off four dozen teachers to try and compensate. With 55 percent reporting, the Parma City Schools Levy passed with 17,644 (53 percent) for and 15,695 (47 percent) against.
One of the most interesting races occurred in Fairview Park, where there was a vote to recall an 8-millage school levy. This levy will stay in effect as 1626 (29 percent) were for and 4,403 (71 percent) were against the recall of the Fairview Park Schools Levy with 67 percent reporting.
