Record Provisional Ballots Cast In Cuyahoga
Board Of Elections Had Its Share Of Problems
CLEVELAND, Updated 11:11 a.m. EST November 8, 2000 -- Cuyahoga County had its share of Election Day trouble, according to NewsChannel5. Some of the mistakes made by workers may delay the outcome of a couple of races.
In Cuyahoga County, the ballot was the largest ever with 210 issues up for vote. This forced board of election employees to work overtime because the final count wasn't tallied until after 2 a.m.
"We had so many people come out to the polls," Tom Jelepis of the Cuyahoga Board of Elections said. "Just a phenomenal election."
WEWS says that board of elections had its share of problems on Election Day because some polling locations ran out of ballots. This created long lines for voters.
At other locations, voters were mistakenly turned away. Some voters, however, showed up at the wrong polling places after being reassigned in 1999.
They were then advised through media outlets to come back to the polls to fill out a provisional ballot.
A record 20,300 provisional ballots were used in Cuyahoga County.
The board of elections is reporting 100 percent of the precincts favoring a TRW development in Lyndhurst, but board of election officials say that TRW shouldn't celebrate just yet.
The issue was approved by 76 votes.
There were more than 590 polling locations run by about 6,500 workers. It will take 10 days before those are tallied.
