  • Republican Wins In Lorain Shift Power

    Democrats Lose Big Races

LORAIN, Ohio, Posted 6:48 a.m. EST November 8, 2000 -- There were some big changes and close races in Lorain County on Election Day.

The Democratic office holders have lost in what could be a fundamental shift in the county's political power structure.

Incumbent County Commissioner Mary Jo Vasi, a Democrat, lost by 421 votes to Republican challenger Eric Flynn who won by 50.2 percent.

Another Democratic incumbent Lorain County Commissioner Michael Ross also lost. Republican David Moore takes the seat with 50.4 percent of the vote. The Lorain County Democrats did win the sheriffs race, however.

A current captain in the department, Phil Stammitti moves up to the top position to replace retiring Sheriff Martin Mahoney.

Phil Stammitti, the new Lorain County Sheriff commented, "I think the experience I have in the department the last 15 years is going to make the difference and I think that's what made the difference in this election to the citizens of the county."

Republican Jeff Manning also captured an open Lorain County Seat in the state legislature.

Democratic Party leaders say that the shift is due to changing demographics in southern Lorain County.
